If we turn a blind eye to the weight of our sins, we will end up neglecting our need for God’s grace. None of us is free from the struggle with sin.

"We struggle with time, with truth, with authority, with finding peace, with purity, with contentment in our words, thoughts, and actions. We struggle with God. Is there hope in all our struggles?

― Colin Smith

“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing."  — Romans 7:18-19

The battlefield is the worst place in the world. Constant danger, bombardment and stress take their debilitating toll on mind and body. No doubt it is impossible for those who have never been in a foxhole fully to comprehend it. Yet the Christian is in the midst of a constant spiritual battle against sin. It is an enemy that never calls a truce. As emphasized by Andrew Gray in his sermons, we will suffer great spiritual damage if we do not maintain constant warfare against it. Sin will gather more strength when we neglect to put it to death for a single day than we can gain to prevail over it through wrestling with it many days. Sin has a subtle dexterity. It can regroup with ease within a few hours. Few other things are more vital for spiritual life and health than putting sin to death.

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander."  — Matthew 15:19

We must know our enemy within indwelling sin and call them what they are. If we turn a blind eye to the weight of our sins, we will end up neglecting our need for God’s grace. None of us is free from the struggle with sin. Knowing our enemy helps us grow in discernment and navigate through the confusions of this age. We will understand and know the full depth and immensity of God's grace. Constant battle against sin helps us gain practical knowledge of the deceiver of the brethren and know his unique subtleties and fathom his devious devices.

“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  1 Corinthians 15:56-57

There is no victory apart from Christ. Without Him, any war that you wage against your indwelling sins will consequently fail. Your bondage to sin was decisively broken by Christ at the cross. You were baptized into his death and raised to “walk in newness of life”. You can win the next skirmish against sin and the flesh, however large or small it proves to be. Your victory over the next temptation is the fruit of His triumph.

Jesus is risen today in triumphant victory over Satan, sin, and death. Through Christ and His gospel, God Almighty has provided us His power for salvation.
