Feeling life's pressure or too busy even for a chill out with your spouse? Spending quality time together as a couple is integral to maintaining a healthy relationship. It is important to root your relationships in God's love and understanding. A strong relationship with God translates to a healthy relationship with one another.

Every fairy tale love story ends happily ever after. But in reality, married couples, whether newlyweds or those who have been together for many years, must know that marriage is a lifetime commitment filled with joy, sorrow, sacrifices and struggles that both husband and wife must share and work on together to build a happy family and fulfil God’s purpose.

We’ve heard so many stories and testimonials from husbands and wives who experienced setbacks in their relationship with each other. One thing to remember and ask ourselves if we are currently going through a rough patch or difficult situation with our significant other is “When was the last time we happily did things together?” or “When was the last time we prayed and read the Bible together?”

A God-centred marriage cultivates harmony and spiritual growth. It is the priority of married couples to the Lord. Remember the Scripture verses:

“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:22).

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25).

One of the foundations of a strong Christian marriage is spending time together as a couple through setting aside a devotional time to pray, worship and read the Bible. Aside from the Bible, there are also helpful Christian resources and books to guide couples in their marriage journey.

Freshen your perspective of devotional time as a form of spiritual discipline in your marriage. Through spending quality devotional time together, couples can strengthen communication and build trust with each other. At the same time, as healthy habits and discipline are cultivated, they can lead to spiritual growth. Here are a few suggestions on how to create a valuable time together:

  1. Set a regular daily or weekly schedule to spend time with God together.

Setting aside a regular schedule even for just 30 minutes to pray, read or reflect is greatly beneficial to a marriage. Devotional time helps to quieten down your hearts from the hustle and bustle of our secular lives and refocus your values on what really matters: God. By centring your lives on Him, having and sticking to a schedule can cultivate a healthy habit and discipline of sacred devotional time with God together.

  2. Prepare something for your devotional time in advance and minimise distractions

Having a plan on what to do during your devotional time brings direction and focus. Do you have a new discovery? Are you reading a good book? Or do you just plan to focus on a Bible Scripture for the day? Share your insights and how God works in your personal experiences. Turn off any mobile gadgets, TV and other distractions that may divert your attention.

  3. Read a Bible Scripture

Reading a passage from the Bible helps you both to understand God and His truth. Reflect and share with each other about how the Scripture applies to your family life and relationship with each other. You can even take the opportunity to evaluate and revisit family goals and personal values, which you can then orientate towards a God-centred life.

  4. Appreciate nature

If the both of you are naturalists, take some time rewind and bask in the wonder of God’s work. Immersing yourselves in nature can help to appreciate God’s creations and spend quality time together as a couple. During the walk, share with each other some prayer requests while enjoying the beauty of nature. Thereafter, pray for each other and share on some things you had observed during the walk that reminds you of the wonder of God. You can even link to what you had prayed for or observed to the devotional material.
