Ever wondered why are Christians called to evangelise? Or not sure how to go about doing so? Read on to find out more!

Commissioned to Fish

The Bible constantly reminds us of what we are to do as disciples of Christ. Cultivating a daily bible reading habit is essential for spiritual growth and becoming more Christlike. One of the responsibilities Jesus called us to do is the Great Commission.

In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus told His disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Everyone is familiar with this verse where Jesus instructed us to “make disciples of all nations”. We are called to share the Gospel to the world. You might not be called to overseas evangelism like missionaries are, but you can still do your part within your local community.

Jesus did not stop here with regard to his instructions. He told His disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) This is simple and clearly relatable to the disciples who were fishermen by trade.  As fishermen, they also understand that like fishing, being “fishers of men” would entail risks with no guaranteed returns. Still, they trusted in the Lord and did their best to share the Gospel, with God being with them every step of the way.

Jesus also calls us “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). He asks us to “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This calls for the importance of personal testimony, whether you share verbally to others or through the actions that others witness. When we testify for the Lord, others can see the greatness and goodness of God working in our lives. In this, we are able to “shine” for the Lord.

Note that Jesus did not call us to spread the good news of His kingdom only once. These are just a few manners in which He had commissioned us to evangelize. It is therefore important for us to commit ourselves, as Jesus had repeatedly urged His disciples, to do so.

Furthermore, God might even call you to full-time ministry. This is not to be confused with the primary responsibility of “fishing” which Jesus had entrusted to us, but a kingdom call to full time service in church or missions organizations. God will equip you with the spiritual gifts needed to answer His call. Check out your spiritual gifts, to see how you may contribute as you avail yourself to the Kingdom work for the glory of God.

Starting Out

God has chosen us to share His message with the people around us, and even through our seemingly mundane experiences, we can inspire others to come to know Him.

Often, we find it hard to take our first step of faith. You might feel that today’s world is increasingly indifferent towards the Gospel, or that the many contemporary issues might prove difficult for you to start a conversation about the faith.

We need to take a small step out of our comfort zone and put ourselves out there. There are many ways to do this. The time tested tele-evangelism and door-to-door evangelism were popular ways of engaging years ago. These days, evangelism happens everywhere: campuses, workplaces, hawker centres.

With the vast information available on the internet, the public is generally aware of the good news of Christ. What sets them apart from becoming believers is how convinced they are by their personal encounters of Christians around them . Being the light of the world calls us to make good examples out of ourselves so that others are able to see God’s love and light, which in turn, inspire them to want to know more about Him.

Effective evangelism stems from your conviction in the faith and your desire for others to know about the Gospel. The Bible reminds us in 1 Peter 3:15 to “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” Not sure what to say when sharing the Gospel? Start with your experience with God! Our testimonies and good deeds are powerful evidence that can convince others of the goodness of God.
