What started as a way to connect with family, friends and share life has turned into marketing, advertising and selling products. More than 95 million photos and videos are posted to instagram everyday and 500 videos are uploaded to Youtube every single minute.

Chris Martin wrote in his book, The Wolf in Their Pockets, "people spend more time scrolling their phones in a given day than they often spend socialising with people. Our relationship with the social internet and various kinds of media we consume comforts us at the cost of truth. The content that keeps our attention best is often the opposite of truth.". We get radicalized by Youtube videos, we overshare intimate details and personal data, we slide down rabbit holes of lust and sexual sin, we never stopped to see how we are transformed by social media. Yet, likewise, we cannot ignore the effects of social media and the internet, positive or negative, nor write them off as some fad or shortlived popular culture nor underestimate their effects in the lives of the people we love.

How do we care for people who are obsessed with followers, views, and likes; how to love those whose online influences have filled them with cynicism and contempt; how to faithfully respond with biblical wisdom, direction, and hope necessary to combat the influence of social media and shape our values and desires: We put our trust in all of “his precious and very great promises” so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:4)

Technology has improved our lives in many ways. However, too much can sometimes lead to harm. A 2017 study from Harvard University found that social media can have a significantly negative impact on social relationships, self-esteem, academic success and overall emotional well-being. The study also linked high-volume social media usage to depression and anxiety. Try a digital detox to give your mind and body a rest.
