Is Our World Going To End Soon?

 

Deadly pandemic. Extreme weather. Record-breaking natural disasters. Deception. Lawlessness. Terrorism. Wars. With the rise of disturbing events in our day, are we closer to the end than ever before?

It is not surprising that more Christians are curious to find clues in the Bible to link current events to prophecies about our earth's future.

 

What is the meaning of "end times"?

For the secular world, it means the end of the world with lots of global mayhem. What comes to mind are Hollywood apocalyptic movies where humanity is wiped out by asteroids, global warming, viral pandemic, artificial intelligence or aliens.

For Christians, the end times refer to the second coming of Jesus Christ, when He will return to earth in glory to judge the living and the dead. What comes to mind are terms like the rapture, tribulation, antichrist, Armageddon, final judgment, and a new heaven and a new earth.

Many prophecies of end-time events are found in Jesus' sermon on the Mount of Olives (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21), the book of Revelation, and several key passages in the Scripture.

Jesus promised His disciples that He will come again. There will be signs, but He did not tell them the exact time. 

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3).

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father" (Matthew 24:36).

Due to the suspense of not knowing the "when", believers throughout the centuries – from Jesus' disciples to you and I today – have been interested in looking out for the signs. Yet there are also many who are so confused about the end-time topic that they ignore or dismiss it.
